Fez, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, is the spiritual and cultural heartbeat of the country. Established in the late 8th century by Idriss I, it holds the distinction of being the first Islamic city founded in Morocco and has remained a center of knowledge, religion, and tradition for centuries.
The city is renowned for its remarkable historical landmarks, including the majestic Royal Palace with its intricate zellige-tiled façade, the University and Mosque of Al Quaraouiyine—considered the world’s oldest existing university—the historic Jewish quarter (Mellah), and the beautifully decorated madrasas with stunning stucco craftsmanship.
Fez is also home to the largest medina in Morocco, a sprawling maze of over 20 interwoven quarters and thousands of narrow alleyways. Within its walls lies a vibrant world of traditional artisanship, with workshops producing fine leather goods, colorful ceramics, handwoven textiles, and more. The ancient tanneries and ceramic ateliers remain among its most iconic attractions.
This tour is carefully curated to offer a rich and immersive experience, providing a comprehensive introduction to Morocco’s cultural depth, architectural beauty, and historic legacy—with Fez as a captivating starting point.
🏞️ Day 1: Journey to the Sahara
Begin your adventure with a scenic drive from Fes into the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first stop is the picturesque town of Ifrane, often referred to as “Morocco’s Switzerland” due to its alpine architecture and clean surroundings.
Continue through the cedar forests of Azrou, home to playful Barbary apes roaming freely in their natural habitat. Travel deeper into the mountains, passing through Midelt and the Ziz Valley, and eventually arrive in Rissani—the historical gateway to the Sahara.
By late afternoon, reach the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Unwind at your desert kasbah or hotel, enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner, and relax to the rhythms of traditional Berber music.
🕒 Drive duration: 7 to 8 hours
🏜️ Day 2: Discovering the Sahara
After breakfast, immerse yourself in a full day of desert discovery. Choose from several experiences: stroll across the vast golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, cool off by the pool at your hotel, or visit surrounding villages.
Explore Merzouga, known for its unique underground water system, and continue to Khamlia—home to the Gnawa people—for a live performance of spiritual music rooted in West African traditions.
In the afternoon, embark on a camel trek into the desert as the sun sets, casting golden light over the dunes. Arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp where you’ll enjoy an authentic dinner under a sky full of stars, accompanied by drumming and storytelling around the campfire.
🌄 Day 3: Return to Fes
Wake early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Sahara. After a peaceful camel ride back to the hotel and breakfast, begin your return journey to Fes.
Enjoy the changing desert landscapes and mountain vistas as you drive through the Middle Atlas range once again, concluding your unforgettable 3-day adventure through Morocco’s southern wonders.
