Ouarzazate, located just south of the High Atlas Mountains, is widely known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. This desert city is not only rich in history and culture, but also serves as the heart of Morocco’s film industry. Numerous internationally acclaimed films and series—such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and Game of Thrones—have been filmed here and in the surrounding landscapes.
One of the city’s architectural highlights is Kasbah Taourirt, a beautifully preserved 19th-century palace showcasing traditional Moroccan design. Nearby lies the iconic Ait Ben Haddou, a striking fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its dramatic beauty and historical significance.
Ouarzazate also serves as a perfect base to explore Morocco’s natural wonders, including the majestic Todra Gorges to the northeast, the lush Dra’a Valley oases to the southeast, and the sweeping sands of the Sahara Desert just to the south.
This destination offers travelers a captivating blend of cinematic heritage, desert landscapes, and timeless Moroccan architecture—an unforgettable stop in any southern Morocco adventure.
🏞️ Day 1: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge
Begin your journey from Ouarzazate, heading into the fertile Skoura Oasis, famed for its expansive palm groves and traditional kasbahs. Stop to explore the impressive Kasbah Amridil, a 17th-century fortress featured on the 50-dirham banknote and a jewel of southern Moroccan architecture.
Continue through the fragrant Valley of Roses in Kelaa M’Gouna, known for its rose cultivation and lively annual festival. Venture off-road through the Atlas Mountains, passing nomadic communities and exploring the Ait Youl Kasbah.
Arrive at the majestic Todra Gorge, where dramatic cliffs rise on either side of a narrow canyon. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, cool mountain air, and a night in a cozy hotel nestled within the gorge.
🏜️ Day 2: Todra Gorge – Draa Valley – Zagora – Erg Chigaga
After breakfast, travel south along the scenic Draa Valley, a lush corridor lined with palm trees and ancient kasbahs. Pass through Zagora, the last major town before the deep desert, and stop at Tamegroute, renowned for its traditional green pottery and historic Islamic library.
Continue your journey toward the majestic Erg Chigaga dunes, one of the most remote and untouched desert regions in Morocco. Upon arrival, embark on a camel trek into the golden dunes to witness a breathtaking sunset.
Spend the night in a traditional Berber desert camp, enjoying an authentic Moroccan dinner, music, and the serenity of the Sahara beneath a star-filled sky.
🌄 Day 3: Erg Chigaga – Lake Iriki – Foum Zguid – Ouarzazate
Rise early to catch the magical sunrise over the dunes, then ride your camel back to camp for breakfast and a refreshing shower.
Begin your return journey through the Iriki dry lakebed, once a seasonal wetland and now a stark yet beautiful desert expanse. Along the way, you may find fossils and enjoy the ever-changing desert scenery.
Pass through Foum Zguid, a remote town at the edge of the desert, before heading back to Ouarzazate, where your unforgettable 3-day desert expedition comes to an end.
