Ouarzazate, located just south of the High Atlas Mountains, is known as the main gateway to the Sahara Desert and a hub of Morocco’s cinematic and cultural heritage. Often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa,” this city has hosted the production of numerous international films and series, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and parts of Game of Thrones.
One of its most remarkable landmarks is Kasbah Taourirt, a 19th-century fortress showcasing classic earthen architecture. Just a short drive away lies Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site, widely considered one of the most beautiful examples of southern Moroccan architecture.
Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, Ouarzazate offers access to diverse natural wonders: the Todra Gorges to the northeast, the lush Dra’a Valley oases to the southeast, and the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert to the south.
Whether you’re drawn by its cinematic fame, desert adventures, or rich history, Ouarzazate serves as the perfect starting point for exploring Morocco’s magical south.
🏞️ Day 1: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Kelaa M’Gouna – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge
Begin your journey with a morning departure from your hotel or riad in Ouarzazate. Drive through the lush Skoura Oasis, famous for its expansive palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Stop at the iconic Kasbah Amridil, a well-preserved 17th-century fortress featured on Morocco’s 50-dirham note.
Continue through the fragrant Valley of Roses in Kelaa M’Gouna, especially known for its rosewater products and annual rose festival. Venture off-road into the Atlas Mountains, where you’ll discover the Ait Youl Kasbah and encounter nomadic communities along the way.
Arrive at the dramatic Todra Gorge, where steep limestone cliffs rise hundreds of feet high. Enjoy the serenity of the gorge, explore its cool streams, and spend the night in a comfortable hotel nestled between the cliffs.
🏜️ Day 2: Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Desert Camp
After breakfast, depart towards Merzouga, passing through the charming desert town of Erfoud, known for its fossil-rich terrain and desert charm. Witness shifting landscapes as you approach the golden Erg Chebbi dunes.
In Merzouga, prepare for an unforgettable camel trek into the dunes. Watch the sun set over the horizon from atop the sand dunes—a truly magical experience. Arrive at your Berber desert camp, where a traditional Moroccan dinner awaits under the starry Sahara sky. Enjoy the warmth of Berber hospitality and spend the night in a cozy tent amidst the silent dunes.
🌄 Day 3: Merzouga – Tafilalet Valley – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate
Wake early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the dunes, followed by a camel ride back to your hotel for breakfast and a refreshing shower.
Begin your return journey through the vast Tafilalet Valley, a region of stony desert, scattered Acacia trees, and traditional settlements. Continue along the lush Draa Valley, famous for its palm groves, ancient kasbahs, and small farms.
Cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains, taking in panoramic views and unique desert landscapes before arriving back in Ouarzazate, marking the end of your captivating 3-day journey through southern Morocco.
