Marrakech is a magical, exotic, and authentically Moroccan city. Nestled amidst palm groves at the base of the majestic High Atlas Mountains, it stands just before the vast Sahara Desert, separated by this natural barrier.
Founded in 1070 by an Almoravid chieftain, Marrakech quickly prospered as the capital of the Almoravid dynasty and thrived as a key hub for trans-Saharan caravan routes.
Within its ancient red ramparts lies the medina, a vibrant labyrinth of alleys, riads, mosques, and the iconic Djemaa El Fna square—alive with performers, storytellers, and traditional Moroccan life.
One of the most captivating areas is the souk, brimming with workshops and colorful stalls. Here, traditional crafts come to life through stunning ceramics, intricate mosaics, handwoven textiles, woodwork, carpets, leather goods, baskets, spices, sweets, and more.
Surrounding the medina is the modern French-influenced city, home to the serene Majorelle Gardens and elegant Art Deco architecture, offering a beautiful blend of heritage and modern charm.
🏞️ Day 1: Marrakech – Telouet – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate
Begin your journey with a pick-up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Drive through the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (7,415 ft), the highest road pass in Morocco.
Branch off toward the iconic Telouet Kasbah, former residence of the powerful Glaoui family. Though partially in ruins, its intricate zellige tiles and stucco details still echo its grandeur.
Continue onward to the breathtaking Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as one of Morocco’s most picturesque villages. Enjoy lunch with a view of the kasbah, followed by a guided tour.
Conclude the day with a short drive to Ouarzazate, where you’ll spend the night in a charming riad or guesthouse.
🐫 Day 2: Ouarzazate – Agdz – Zagora – Tamgroute – M’Hamid Desert Camp
Head toward Agdz, passing through the beautiful Draa Valley, with its lush palm groves and scattered Berber villages. Stop to visit the historic Kasbah Tamnougalt, the oldest in the valley.
Continue south to Zagora, the legendary “Gateway to the Desert”, where you’ll pause for lunch.
Afterward, travel to M’Hamid, the edge of the Sahara. In the late afternoon, embark on a magical camel ride across the dunes, arriving at your Berber desert camp just in time for sunset, followed by dinner under the stars.
🏜️ Day 3: M’Hamid Kasbahs – Erg Chigaga Desert Camp
After breakfast, ride your camel back to M’Hamid village and explore the remains of its ancient kasbahs. Then depart via 4×4 toward the majestic Erg Chigaga dunes, one of Morocco’s two great sand sea regions.
Cross stunning desert landscapes, feeling the vast silence and space of the Sahara.
Return briefly to M’Hamid for lunch, then journey deep into the dunes by jeep, where you’ll spend a second magical night in a Berber desert camp, complete with traditional dinner and music around the fire.
🌋 Day 4: Erg Chigaga – Lake Iriqui – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – High Atlas – Marrakech
Start your day with a thrilling off-road drive (90 km) through the desert toward Lake Iriqui, a shimmering seasonal lake surrounded by fossil-rich plains.
Continue to Foum Zguid, where you’ll stop for a refreshing shower and lunch. Then head to Taznakht, famous for its Berber carpets and weaving traditions.
Cross the rugged landscapes of southern Morocco—mountains, oases, and nomadic communities—before re-entering the High Atlas Mountains and descending back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
