Marrakech is a magical, exotic, and authentically traditional Moroccan city. Nestled amidst lush palm groves at the foot of the majestic High Atlas Mountains, it stands separated from the vast Sahara Desert by this natural barrier.
Founded in 1070 by an Almoravid chieftain, Marrakech flourished as the Almoravid capital and became prosperous as a central hub for caravan routes crossing the Sahara.
Inside its ancient ramparts lies the vibrant medina—a fascinating labyrinth of narrow alleys, traditional riads, historic mosques, and elegant minarets. At its heart, the bustling Djemaa El Fna square teems with storytellers, musicians, and local life.
One of the city’s highlights is the souk, a colorful maze of workshops and stalls where traditional crafts come alive. Here you can find exquisite ceramics, intricate mosaics, fine cloth and clothing, detailed woodwork, vibrant carpets, quality leather goods, handwoven baskets, as well as a variety of foods, sweets, and spices.
Surrounding the medina is the modern French-influenced city, home to the stunning Majorelle Gardens and impressive examples of Art Deco architecture, offering a perfect blend of heritage and modernity.
🏞️ Day 1: Marrakech – Dades Valley via High Atlas Mountains
Start your adventure with a pick-up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech and head toward the majestic High Atlas Mountains.
Cross the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco at 7,415 feet, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
Your first stop will be the historic Telouet Kasbah, once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family. Despite its ruined state, the kasbah still retains its impressive stucco work and intricate zellige tiles, echoing its former grandeur.
Continue to the scenic village of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most beautiful locations.
Pass through Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the south, and the lush Skoura Oasis with its palm groves and ancient kasbahs.
Travel through Kela’a M’gouna, the famous Valley of Roses, known for its rose oil production.
End the day in the stunning Dades Valley, renowned for its fertile palm-filled valleys and red mountains dotted with ksars and kasbahs.
🏜️ Day 2: Dades Valley – Merzouga Desert
Begin your morning with a walk along the Todra Gorge river, surrounded by towering canyon walls.
Then set off for Merzouga, enjoying a scenic drive through impressive landscapes. Stop for lunch either near the Todra Gorges or amidst the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Continue through Erfoud and Rissani, traveling along the Ziz Valley, ancestral home of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty.
Upon arrival in Merzouga, relax with traditional Moroccan tea at a local inn before embarking on a magical two-hour camel ride into the Sahara dunes at sunset.
Arrive at a traditional Berber desert camp for dinner and overnight stay under the starry desert sky.
🐪 Day 3: Merzouga – Tamnougalt – Return to Marrakech
Start the day early with a sunrise camel ride over the dunes, witnessing the spectacular light and shadow play at dawn.
Then drive back through the Dra’a Valley, passing the charming desert villages of Tazzarine and N’Qob.
Continue to Agdz and visit the ancient Kasbah Tamnougalt, a picturesque fortress in the former capital of the Mezguita Berbers.
Overnight stay in the oasis before continuing.
🌄 Day 4: Agdz – Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
Begin your day with a short walk in the palm oasis of Agdz.
