Fez is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and remains the spiritual, intellectual, and cultural heart of the nation. Founded in the late 8th century by Idriss I, it holds the distinction of being the first Islamic city established in Morocco.
The city is home to some of the country’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the grand Royal Palace with its exquisite zellige-tiled façade, the world-renowned Kairouyine University and Mosque, the historic Jewish quarter (Mellah), and stunning madrasas adorned with intricate stucco and tile work.
Fez also boasts the largest medina in Morocco—a vast, labyrinthine city-within-a-city, divided into over 20 distinct quarters and thousands of narrow alleyways. The medina is alive with traditional craftsmanship, from colorful ceramics and textiles to woodworking and leather goods. Among its most famous sights are the ancient tanneries, where leather is dyed using centuries-old techniques, and the ceramic workshops located on the city’s outskirts.
These tours are carefully crafted to offer a comprehensive and immersive introduction to Morocco’s rich heritage, with Fez as a captivating starting point.
🏞️ Day 1: Fes to Todra Gorge via Rich and Ait Hani
Begin your journey from Fes and head south through the picturesque Middle Atlas Mountains. Make a stop in Ifrane—often called “Morocco’s Switzerland”—before continuing through the cedar forests of Azrou, where you may spot playful Barbary apes. Continue to Midelt for a relaxing lunch break.
From there, travel through Rich and Ait Hani, passing through traditional Berber villages and soaking in the authentic culture and mountain landscapes. Arrive at Todra Gorge by evening and settle into a comfortable hotel nestled between the gorge’s dramatic cliffs.
🏜️ Day 2: Todra Gorge to Erg Chigaga
Start your morning exploring the towering rock walls of Todra Gorge before continuing through the scenic Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations. Cross the rugged Jbel Saghro Mountains en route to the edge of the Sahara.
Arrive at Erg Chigaga, one of the most remote and breathtaking dune regions in Morocco. Embark on a camel trek across the golden sands and enjoy the sunset before spending the night at a traditional nomad camp, complete with a Moroccan dinner under the stars.
🌄 Day 3: Erg Chigaga Exploration
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Sahara during a full day at Erg Chigaga. Enjoy optional activities such as sandboarding, guided dune walks, or simply relaxing in the tranquil desert atmosphere.
In the evening, gather around the campfire for a traditional Berber dinner accompanied by local music—an authentic cultural experience under a star-filled sky.
🏯 Day 4: Erg Chigaga to Ait Benhaddou
Leave the desert behind and travel through rugged terrain toward the ancient ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its striking clay architecture and cinematic history.
Explore the narrow alleys and well-preserved kasbahs before spending the night in a charming guesthouse within the village, soaking in the unique atmosphere and desert charm.
🌇 Day 5: Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech via High Atlas
On your final day, journey through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, crossing the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views as you descend toward Marrakech.
Upon arrival, take time to explore the city’s historic landmarks, bustling souks, and vibrant streets. Your 5-day desert adventure from Fes concludes in the magical red city of Marrakech, where new stories begin.
