Overview
Fez is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and is the heart of its intellectual, cultural and religious life. Founded in the late 8th century by Idriss 1, it was the first Islamic town to be built in Morocco. It thus has famous historical sites, including the Royal Palace with its magnificent zellige facade, Kairouyine University and mosque, the old Jewish quarter or mellah, a magnificent medersa or Islamic school of exceptional stucco work, and the largest medina in Morocco, a labyrinth divided into some 20 smaller medinas of thousands of alleys. Like Marrakech, it has a wealth of traditional crafts and workshops, most famously the ancient tanneries at the lower end of the medina and ceramic workshops on the outskirts of the city.
