🚌 Day 1: Journey to the Sahara – Marrakech to the Edge of the Desert
Pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech to start this magical journey. Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, Morocco’s highest main road. Pass through Berber villages and lush palm-filled valleys. Continue beyond Ouarzazate, cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains, and follow the Dra’a Valley with its date palm oases and historic kasbahs. Overnight in a camp on the edge of the Sahara.
🐪 Day 2: Entering the Desert – Trekking from M’Hamid to Sidi Naji
Meet your desert guides and camels after breakfast. Get help wrapping your turban for desert protection. Trek along the southern banks of the Dra’a River through M’Hamid’s palm groves. Stop for lunch at Ras Nkha, then trek southwest for about 2.5 hours to the marabout shrine of Sidi Naji. Camp overnight in nearby sand dunes.
🏜️ Day 3: Exploring the Sands – The Remote Dunes of Erg Ezzahar
Travel to the remote sand dunes of Erg Ezzahar before lunch. Trek across mostly flat, dried-lake terrain that transitions into rolling dunes. Camp at the foot of high dunes, enjoy lunch among smaller dunes, and spend the afternoon exploring. Climb to the highest point at sunset for breathtaking views of the vast “erg” (sand sea). Overnight under the stars.
🌾 Day 4: Desert History – Crossing the Dra’a River to Erg Smar
Cross the wide bed of the Dra’a River and trek to the abandoned desert settlement of Erg Smar, once home to up to 35 families. Camp under large tamarisk trees offering rare desert shade. After lunch, explore the settlement, riverbanks, and dunes.
🌵 Day 5: Discovering Bougaran – Dunes and Plateaus
Break camp after breakfast. Trek from Erg Smar, crossing small dunes and an earth plateau where gazelle trails might be seen. After lunch under trees, continue through vegetation and sand to reach the rolling dunes of Bougaran, where you camp for the night.
🏞️ Day 6: Varied Landscapes – Trekking to Erg Bertam
Trek through diverse landscapes: water traces, rocky hamada valleys, and sand dunes. Lunch is served under tamarisk trees, then continue across fertile flatlands occasionally farmed after rains. Camp overnight in the small dunes of Erg Bertam.
🏘️ Day 7: Return to Civilization – From Dunes to M’Hamid
Depart after breakfast towards M’Hamid. Terrain transitions from dunes to palm groves after crossing a river. Lunch stop before arriving at the village. Spend the night in camp or hotel.
🚗 Day 8: Back to Marrakech – Scenic Drive North
Early departure from M’Hamid to Marrakech, retracing Day 1’s route. Stop for lunch, photos, and optional visits to cooperatives for souvenirs. Arrival in Marrakech late afternoon. We recommend booking a riad or hotel for the night—assistance available on request.
