Overview
Ouarzazate is a Moroccan city south of the High Atlas Mountains, the major gateway to the Sahara. It is the centre of the Moroccan film industry and many major films—Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and parts of Game of Thrones—have been made here and in the surrounding areas, A unique site is the Kasbah Taourirt, a 19th century palace, as well as Ait Ben Haddou, a fortress considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is close to amazing landscapes—the Torda Gorges to the northeast, the lush, palm-filled oases of the Dra’a Valley to the southeast and the Sahara to the south.
